When looking into video games and what happened when you are spending so much time on them, my group found very common but also interesting things. As a group we researched benefits and also negative effects on people who play video games and here are the two that stood out to us the most.
Everyone knows that playing video games has its bad sides. The negative effect that we found on people who play video games is that it can lead to addictive behavior. By addicted behavior we mean that the people playing video games get a very addictive connection to video games. According to Livestrong, addictive behavior due to video games causes lose of interest in previous hobbies and/or activities. People who show additive behavior from video games also are constantly thinking of their next video game session and when they can get back to the video games themselves.
One benefit to playing video games was found by buisnessinsider.com. People who play video games make accurate decisions 25% faster than people who don't play video games. They make faster decisions because the video games require thinking and fast reactions.

Highschool Football and Concussions
When looking at the video "Football High", it is beyond obvious what the major problem in football is; concussions. When looking into football, it is well aware how easy it is for a player to get a concussion. Concussions are usually just looked away from in this video. The coaches don't even really tend to care unless told to by someone like an athletic trainer. Coaches and players themselves don't realize how dangerous a concussion is, especially if it isn't your first one.
On solution you could use to help the concussion out is to provide an athletic trainer to every football team. I think this would be a great solution because then you would have a second opinion on injuries, also a medical opinion and someone who is looking out for the health of people and not just looking to win. The negative to this solution is that not every school has the money to throw away into getting an athletic trainer. Athletic trainers would be the best bet, but they also cost money that some schools might not have.
The second solution that might help with the problems of concussions is the helmets that are used in high school football. They should develop new helmets that would not only give your skull more adding but also slow your brain down from hitting the side of your head so there isn't as many concussions being developed. The pro to this solution would be less concussions and also it would prevent other injuries. The negative side to this is there might not be a way to develop a helmet to slow your brain down, it would take a lot of time to come up with something like this, and the research and whole process would also take a lot of money to proceed.

Soccer in America
The main point that is discussed between Chuck Klosterman and Frank Deford is soccer and it's issue and interest in America. Both Klosterman and Deford have some ideas that are related, but also have a few things to say that contrast each other's opinions. Deford and Klosterman both pretty much agree on one big picture; soccer is not popular in America. They both talk about how the majority of Americans would prefer a different sport over soccer; but some of their views are completely different.
Klosterman's main support of the reasoning behind American's not liking soccer is because of soccer itself. He says that soccer is a cover up sport for the people who don't fit in anywhere else. He also bases this support on his own experience, such as not fitting in as a kid, and children playing soccer themselves. Deford says that the reason that soccer is not popular in America isn't because of soccer itself, but the Americans. Deford says that the Americans won't give soccer a chance while Klosterman says soccer doesn't deserve a chance.

Sexy Men
While our class was surveyed about what made a man "sexy", the results came back different than the readings opinions. In the reading, sports and war were the two main things that were compared to how men should be brought up, act, or be resembled. Then we talked about the "dirty dozen" metaphors and compared the two from the sports side and also the war side. The results in these metaphors also did not compare to the results from our class based opinion survey.
The main results from our survey said that the things that made a "sexy" man weren't the same qualities that were discussed in the "dirty dozen" or the article. The main things that were found in the survey were things like hair, smile, and height; as to in the dirty dozen, things like personality, independence, and basic skills knowledge were very high up in the rankings. When you look at the survey, the things that were high in the article were the lowest in the survey and vise versa. I think that the two results were far from the same. I realized that if you put the results together the perfect man would be someone who has nice hair and teeth, is very kid friendly and also independent.

Masculinity in Rap Music
In today's society, you often see a lot of people who listen to rap music; but if I had to put a bet on it, more men listen to rap music than women. I think that this is a connection to masculinity as well. As we read in the article of Marlboro Country, it really discussed true masculinity in men, such as hard working cowboys who don't talk, don't rely on anyone and smoke Marlboros. As that article was written, it described true masculinity.
I think that when you look more deeply into rap music, who is usually the rappers; men. Who are more likely to listen to rap music; men. I think there is a connection here because the thing that men rappers rap about, are easy to relate to when you are a man. I am not saying that women don't listen to rap music or they shouldn't, it's just more common in men. When we watched the top rap/hip-hop songs in America in class, you could see that the rappers/singers were all men, they talked about women and their lives. It is easier for men to make the connection to today's rap music and it really shows their own masculinity.

Today's Sex Icon
When looking into today's popular culture. There are several women that you could think of that would fit in perfect for today's sex icons. After thinking about this topic for a while, I finally came up with a woman that would do it justice; Scarlett Johansson. The reason that I choose Scarlett Johansson is pretty obvious. She's gorgeous, an actress, a model, blonde hair, she's busty, and all the guys love her. Johansson has been in several movies and also has modeled for several ads. Scarlett Johansson doesn't exactly match up to Marilyn Monroe or Pamela Anderson, but she's done her own things to make popular culture's sex woman.
Scarlett Johansson has modeled for several ads, magazine, and commercials. She was named "Sexiest Woman Alive" by several magazines, including the same magazine twice! To compare her to Marilyn Monroe and Pamela Anderson, Scarlett Johansson has also dated celebrities such as actor Ryan Reynolds and Sean Penn. She has also took a stand like Marilyn Monroe. Scarlett Johansson isn't afraid to show people that curves are a blessing to women, rather then skin and bones. Scarlett Johansson compares to Pamela Anderson in another way as well; her activism. Johansson became a global ambassador for Oxfam.
Scarlett Johansson has every quality that today's popular culture should have for a sex icon and is great at showing it!

This is Emo vs. Sulking with Lisa Loeb
In This is Emo, Klosterman discusses the effect on people based off of romantic couples in the popular culture that we experience. It is obvious today that when people watch movies or read books, they get hooked on not only characters, but even their personalities and their every moves; including relationships. While reading this article, it is well brought up that the people in our society fall more in love with fictional characters in movies than their real relationships. Klosterman talks about his girlfriend who really loved John Cusack more. This is Emo discusses models the same way that Sulking with Lisa Loeb does.
In Sulking with Lisa Loeb, it is written the people in generations play a huge part in this need to be like our popular culture. A huge example in this article is Star Wars. When people saw Star Wars for the first time, they loved Luke Skywalker. They saw him as a real person instead of a fictional character in some weird movie. They saw him as someone else that related to their lives. This also relates to This is Emo because both articles of popular culture connected to the reality of people and how they see themselves or want their lives to be. Whether they connect to someone like Luke Skywalker or want a boyfriend like John Cusack, popular culture in this reaction, affected the population greatly.

The Internet
There are so many different opinions in the world that are based off of the Internet. Is it good or bad? Do people actually learn from it? Is it just another step into technology until something new comes in to take its place? I think that the Internet is a good thing for people to have. It really helps with a lot of things that you can't do when you don't have Internet access.
When relating to the other readings from earlier in class, such as "The Futile Pursuit of Happiness" by Jon Gertner. In this article it talks about different ways that things make people happy. I think that these two articles really connect because happiness is involved. People don't usually just use the internet for no reason, a lot of people use it because it makes them happy. Another question from "The Futile Pursuit of Happiness" was what happens when someone's thoughts about their happiness are true and actually make them feel the way they think they will? I think this connects to people's use on the internet; the opposite way. When people get on the internet, they are most often looking for something or an answer that they know the Internet will have; but what happens when they can't find the answer they were looking for and the Internet has failed them? I think that is the point where the Internet is bad because everyone depends on it for most of their life which isn't a really good things to get in to.

Technology vs. The World
Does anyone remember back to the age of 7 or 8? When the outside world seemed so nice and interesting? You could walk outside and play all kinds of games with your family, friends, or neighbors. I can probably speak for most when saying if you walked outside to check on a bunch of 7 or 8 year olds now, they would all have some sort of technology in their hand; phone, video game, etc. Since the early 2000's, technology has been trying to take over the world with all its new creations such as smart phones, social media, and wireless internet. When the Millennial Generation got attached to the new technology, the world took a turn for the worse.
With technology rises still to this day, the Millennial Generation has became very dependent on things such as internet, wireless connection, and social media. How many of you have checked twitter at least 3 times this morning on your SMARTPHONE while using WIRELESS INTERNET? I thought so. Although the generation has became very dependent on things, I guess you could say that they have also learned some skills from it all to, like multitasking. I personally think that our parents got us to where we are today as the Millennial Generations. A lot of parents go out and buy all these new technology gadgets like smartphones, video games, computers, and just hand them to their kids. This isn't really helping the technology problem. When the Millennial Generation grows older and has their own kids, I am really afraid to see what will happen with them and the rest of their generation.

Spaghetti Sauce = Happiness?
Everyone has a different perspective on their happiness in life. Some people get happiness out of going to the mall and buying everything that they want; others get happiness out of opening presents from family on Christmas. People who receive natural happiness get it from choices and receive freedom as well. When getting synthetic happiness, it isn't always what you wanted but is being happy with what you get.
In Malcolm Gladwell's video comparing happiness to spaghetti sauce, he talks about ways in which spaghetti sauce brought both synthetic and natural happiness to the world today. I processed the video as Gladwell was describing both happiness's. While he talked about natural happiness, I think the main point that proved this was that Prego spaghetti sauce has gave buyers a choice. They put buyer's consideration into play by asking them what they wanted in spaghetti sauce and gave them that. Gladwell also gave examples related to synthetic happiness such as the platonic dish, which is something everyone would love. He also talked about how people were pretty much stuck with things like plain black coffee and thin spaghetti sauce that people were stuck with and learned to be happy with it. Overall, Malcolm Gladwell's video showed that spaghetti sauce didn't only bring natural happiness to the world, but synthetic happiness as well.
